Chapter Twenty-One

Every time Tony looked over at Jack sitting with Sarah on the hotel bed, a smile hit and warmth burst in his chest. Tony knew he was screwed when all it took was Jack asking for help to have Tony running back after Jack had tossed him out. But now watching him sit next to his daughter, hanging on every deep, even breath of her sleep, Tony knew he was as gone as Sean and Kyle at their most disgusting.

He loved that man.

As Sarah turned and took a shaky breath, Jack brushed his hand across her forehead. Tony wanted to kiss him, hug him, blow him, fuck him and have five kids with him all at the same time.

In the middle of all the chaos this afternoon, Jack had been that strong quiet guy Tony had jumped to move in with in the first place.

Tony gave the secretary credit for not seeing just a tantrum when Sarah started that horrible screaming. Thinking about it now put a chill down Tony’s spine the way no horror movie could match. The secretary called the school psychologist who got there at the same time as Brandon, proving that no matter what year it was, nothing could spread bad news faster than a bunch of teenagers in high school.

Despite the fact that Sarah barely paused for breath in her shrieks, Jack laid it all out for Dr. Gates: divorce, gay, near-drowning in icy water, Patrice getting out of the hospital. In a strong, calm voice, Jack said, “I walked away from them once, but I’m not leaving them this time.”

They carried Sarah to the nurse’s office, shutting out the Head who’d been dancing nervously around them. The guy was probably torn between visions of bad press and being cut off from the Howards’ cash flow. With Sarah on an exam table but still clinging to her dad, Dr. Gates took charge.

Man, was Dr. Gates pissed when she couldn’t find anything about the accident or psychological care in Sarah’s records. Tony would be willing to bet she hadn’t been told about the not-talking thing. The doctor didn’t raise her voice, but Tony could tell someone was in for an ass-kicking with the doc’s Birkenstocked feet.

Turned out to be Jack’s shitty in-laws, because the doc had a friend who was a child advocate or some kind of ad-litem thing for the courts, and after she showed up, a bunch of papers got faxed from Jack’s lawyer, words like founded abuse and medical neglect got tossed about, and Jack had legal permission to take his kids with him all without ever letting go of his daughter’s hand.

Tony knew if he ever needed anything done again, he was calling on the Lesbian Network of Massachusetts. Those girls worked fast. And they were everywhere.

Of course, the Mass judge’s order wasn’t binding in Ohio, but the whole founded-abuse thing sounded like it would get some mileage when they had to talk to the Ohio court. Maybe Jack wouldn’t need the big fake stable-relationship thing and tell Tony his services were no longer required.
